Heroes Remembered.

The 90th anniversary of the Remembrance Day was celebrated last week in Canada and other western countries.

I found interesting this year Regis Philbin's symbolic gesture to wear Canadian poppy during his morning show Regis and Kelly. He also suggested that the other western countries should adopt the Canadian custom to wear poppies prior and during Remembrance Day celebration.

Cyber perfect fireworks.

Computers are everywhere, even in the fireworks business. You need them to transform the traditional fireworks into a perfect art. I'm eager to see tomorrow (at University of Waterloo's Columbia Lake Fields) a cyber perfect fireworks demonstration done by one of the best, Dave Whysall.

Canada prepares for its 141 anniversary.

All of Canada is ready for the big party. Starting with the Capital, to big cities, regions and every community the Canadian national feeling will proudly live tomorrow. While any celebration is a good reason to have fun it is also the time to look at the achievements and challenges to overcome for a brighter future.

Happy Canada Day, eh!

Hollywood stars in Stratford.

The Shakespearean fame of Ontario's Stratford Shakespeare Festival is starting to attract Hollywood stars. Besides Canadian star Christopher Plummer that has Stratford in his heart (see my note in this post), Brian Dennehy is another Hollywood star to play in Stratford.

Enthralled by Water's Thirst.

Unusual, provocative, intriguing, uplifting. These are the usual attributes of most of Perimeter Institute (PI) cultural events.

Last week Pushing the Perimeter event "Reaching for Nothing: Water's Thirst" was no exception.

From the unconventional stage setup, the diversity of performance types (incorporating science elements), sound and visual effects and the power to transcend and immerse the audience into the artistic fantasy of the alternating space/time perceptions, everything was at the perimeter of cultural expression.

There is something magic about water and its relation with space and time. Maybe its dual spatial and temporal nature creates the back and forth perception of space shifting into time and back into space.

The show had the power to convey this feeling.

Kudos to NUMUS and PI for this great world premiere.

Tribute to a Canadian legend.

Jeff Healey is not anymore among us. His music discovery voyage came suddenly to a stop. I remember his jazz passion and the way he was feeling the music with his entire being during one of the PI Einsteinfest lecture. I remember his storyteller like soft voice and rock star performances during the Kitchener Blues Festival.

His big and generous heart covered like a maple leaf not only the Canadian soil but the entire world.

He raised above his limits proving that the human spirit is immortal.

A cruel and unfair fate stopped his star from becoming brighter but he will shine forever on the Canadian musical spheres.

A Touching Remembrance.

Year by year Canadians prove that the sacrifices of their veterans are not forgotten.

This year, I found quite touching the Remembrance Day interview and the soldier's poem read by Sgt. Lloyd Donohue of Kitchener.

Nation baptized by walls of fire.

These days during the 90th anniversary of Vimy Ridge victory I've learned about the glorious past of a great nation.

It is quite interesting to discover that Canada showed to the world its national status in a impressive way. Using state of the art technology and pioneering war strategy the united Canadian troops raised world's eyebrows in making possible the impossible (as exclaimed by a French soldier) by a surprising victory at Vimy Ridge.

Such a brilliant victory didn't come though without sacrifices. Even though 80% of the enemy's fire power was taken out by Canadian artillery (by using for the first time wireless communication of spy planes) the impossible challenge of conquering Vimy Ridge required military geniality that Canadians found in synchronizing infantry advance with artillery's fire power that was opening the way. In spite of all these innovations over 10000 Canadians (out of 100000 engaged in the battle) made the red carpet of victory with their bodies, giving birth to a nation.
